Independence Day is an important day of celebration in our family. Over the years we have had a number of different traditions, from gathering with extended family members on an East Coast beach, to watching our neighborhood July 4th parade, to visiting a national park. Each is centered around the same basic idea that we are one – with our family, with our neighbors, with our fellow Americans. My dad was the proudest American I have known, ever faithful to the opportunities that this country provides, while willing to admit and accept her flaws. His parents were both born in Ireland and came to America for opportunity the likes of which they would never have seen in their beautiful but limited homeland. They made a hard journey to become American citizens. My parents also had a hard journey of taking that immigrant story, adding some education and ambition, and turning it into the tale of entrepreneurship and a business built around helping people.  Our business was founded on the understanding that financial independence can lead to personal independence, followed by a level of confidence that creates even more opportunity.

According to a Gallup poll, the amount of “extreme pride” in America has dropped from 70% in 2003 to 42% in 2019. I am sure lots of people who have different expertise than I do can explain this, but whatever the reason, I feel heavy-hearted when I see that stat continue to fall. Despite the challenges within our country today, I am part of the 42%, and am focusing on the great things about America – from our national parks, to the way we help our fellow man, to the people we attract and nurture.

From our family to yours, Happy Independence Day.
